Barrie play.

Original vintage photograph with stamp of Edwin Bower Hesser on the back and "#5" in pencil. Originally 16 x 13 in., this lovely photograph has been trimmed to to 15 x 12¼ in.; there is a 1 in. edge tear at lower right, which just touches the image and a couple of tiny tears at upper edge and top left, which affect nothing. The image itself has only a couple of minuscule flecks. This photo has been in storage for 40+ years, since Hesser's death.

Crawford, Joan (1905-1977) Academy Award winning actress; her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is at 1750 Vine Street. Two original vintage 13¼ x 10¼ in. photographs, c. late 1920s. Embossed "Edwin Bower Hesser" imprint at lower left on both. A typed note is affixed to the back of one, from Karl Hesser: "This is the picture of Miss Joan Crawford from which pastel shipped to you was made. Head and shoulders only were featured in the pastel." Minor edge damage to one, easily matted out. Two lovely photos of a youthful Joan Crawford. She would become George Hurrell's favorite subject. These photos have been in storage for 40+ years, since Hesser's death.

Dean, James. Two 14 x 11" photos by Sanford Roth. In one, Dean's back is to the camera as he listens to Pegot Waring, his sculpture instructor; he is wearing a belt with his name on it. The second photo, made the same day as the first, in Warings's studio, shows him from right profile as he sculpts. He is wearing glasses and smoking. The photographer's stamp is on the verso of both photos. Dean was intellectually curious, sculpture being one of his interests.

Roth and Dean became friends when Roth was assigned to photograph the filming of Giant. Dean visited the Roths at their home in Los Angeles frequently in the last two months of his life. Roth was following in another car when Dean died in his Porsche on the way to a sports car race in Salinas. As Roth himself died in 1962, original prints of his work are quite rare. This shot was taken at Dean's last home in the San Fernando Valley.

Photographer's stamp is on the verso, with a typed explanation of the scene taped to the back. The photo shows Dean rehearsing with Rock Hudson and others. In the scene, Dean, as Jett Rink, is backing out the door of the Reata Ranch, where he worked as a hand, after turning down an offer for a small parcel of land left him by the late woman owner. Oil is discovered on his land and he becomes wealthy. Giant, Dean's third and final movie, was filmed in summer and early fall of 1955 and released in 1956, after his death (September 30, 1955).

He traveled with Dean to Fairmont, Indiana, the farming community where Dean lived with his aunt and uncle from the age of five until he graduated high school. Dean is pictured playing the bongos, surrounded by cattle and pigs. Stock's stamp with his company's name, Magnum Photo, Inc., is on the verso, as well as a large "Magnum Photo Library Print" stamp.

Original vintage 15½ x 13¼ in. photograph of the "Orchid Lady," c. 1920s, signed in the plate by photographer Edwin Bower Hesser. A luminous chest-up portrait of Griffith, who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1560 Vine Street. In 1938, she wrote the lyrics for the Washington Redskins' fight song, "Hail to the Redskins." The top edge has been trimmed ½ in. and upper left corner has soiling (easily matted out), not affecting the remainder of the photo. Hayes, Helen (1900-1993) "First Lady of the American Stage." 13 x 10 in. vintage print of Helen Hayes and her husband, playwright Charles MacArthur. With embossed "Clarence Sinclair Bull" stamp at lower right edge; stamped and numbered on verso. The photo shows Miss Hayes developing a photograph as her husband watches. Bull took the picture for MGM. Hayes and MacArthur moved to Hollywood in 1930 when MacArthur was hired as a screenwriter for MGM. Miss Hayes won her first Oscar in 1931 for The Sin of Madelon Claudet.

Hesser's embossed imprint is at the lower edge of all three and his stamp is on the verso. All are sepia-toned head and shoulders portraits that focus on Miss Lombard's startlingly beautiful eyes. These photos have been stored for over 40 years, since Hesser's death. One photo has a "bite" missing at lower left corner; one has been trimmed slightly at right edge, and there are a couple of faint edge blemishes. Stunning!

Loy, Myrna (1905-1993) Actress who started in silent movies and successfully made the transition to talkies; she is best known for her role as Nora Charles opposite William Powell in six "Thin Man" movies. Two original vintage photographs by Edwin Bower Hesser, c. late 1920s, early 1930s. One is 12¼ x 9½ in.; it is affixed at the two top corners to a 19¾ x 14¾ in. mount. Bower's printed signature is on the mount, under the lower right edge of the photo, which is a chest-up portrait of Miss Loy. The mount is toned, with edge damage, but the photo is beautiful. The second photo is 13¼ x 10¼ in. with Hesser's embossed imprint at lower left. Miss Loy is dressed in a dark brown coat and hat and posed against a dark brown background, making her face the center of attention. There is slight silvering to the edges. Exquisite!

Both were originally 16 x 13¼ in.; both have been trimmed about an inch at top, not affecting the images; one has a crease at lower left, minor blemishes on her hand and in lower right corner; both have damage to upper corners, all of which could be matted out. These are still exquisite photographs. Miss Page's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is at 6116 Hollywood Boulevard. These photos have been in storage for 40+ years, since Hesser's death.

Lower left corner is lacking, and there are a few tiny scratches in the emulsion on the left side, only one of which is noticeable on the skirt of her dress; otherwise, a beautiful image. An astute business person, she was the first actress to produce her own films and the first actor or actress to get a percentage of the profits of her films. In 1919, she co-founded United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., whom she married in 1920. This photo has been in storage for 40+ years, since Hesser's death.

Pickford, Mary & Fairbanks, Douglas (1893-1979 and 1883-1939) Original vintage 16 x 13 in. photograph of the most famous couple in the world during the 1920s and early 30s. Made by Edwin Bower Hesser, although his stamp is not on the verso (this was part of Hesser's belongings when he died in the early 1960s). There is a one inch tear at top edge and a couple of other edge blemishes, including one tiny tear at lower right, none of which will show when framed. Original vintage 14 x 11 in.photograph, c. late 1920s, early 1930s, with stamp of photographer Edwin Bower Hesser on verso and manuscript notation, "Norma Shearer # 5 / exclusive." Border has been trimmed, not affecting image, and there are a few tiny blemishes on Miss Shearer's upper left arm. This photo has been in storage for 40+ years, since Hesser's death.

Taylor, Ruth (1908-1984) Mack Sennet comedienne best known for nabbing the most sought-after role of 1928: Lorelei Lee in the screen version of Anita Loos' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Original vintage 16 x 13¼ photograph by Edwin Bower Hesser. Marked on verso: "Artists Proofs / Property of Edwin Bower Hesser / 5942 Hollywood Blvd / Hollywood Calif. / not for Reproduction." The actress is also identified: "Ruth Taylor / featured in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Silvering around edges; missing lower right corner; faint discoloration on the right side of her nose, and a few minor white flecks. The estimate reflects the blemishes. This photo has been in storage for 40+ years, since Hesser's death.
